NEW YORK (TheStreet) — The markets were closed on Monday but opened with a bang Tuesday. After jumping over 1.5% in early trading, U.S. stocks powered higher into the close, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbing nearly 400 points and the S&P 500 ETF finishing higher by 2.5%. It was a big relief for investors after stocks slid hard on Thursday and Friday.

A lot of last week’s selling was likely caused by investors trying to lower their exposure to stocks ahead of the three-day Labor Day weekend, Tim Seymour, managing partner of Triogem Asset Management, explained on CNBC’s “Fast Money” TV show. Tuesday’s gains seemed like a relief rally, he said, adding that it was constructive for the S&P 500 to close above 1,960.
